I originally started my work experience in Gordon Elliot's racing stables in Longwood , Co. Meath but I shortly realized that it wasn't for me . On arrival I was shown where to leave my stuff , where to eat lunch and where to get my saddle and bridle . I was introduced to Davy , one of the jockeys who was going to help me and give me instructions throughout the day . They assessed my riding ability and assigned me two horses .
Work undertaken :
I was given my first horse 'Lackaneen Leader' , I made my way down to his stable where I tacked him up . I got up and waited in the arena for the rest of the jockeys before making our way down to the gallops . After I had finished I was then given my second horse 'Definite Ruby' . I tacked her up and followed the same routine as before .
After I had finished I helped Davy to clip the horses that were going to be racing in Cheltenham the week after . After 4 hours We had eventually finished and I went for my lunch break at 2 o'clock before returning to work at 2:30 . I then started to pull all the horses manes so they would be ready to go to Cheltenham . I was finished at 4 o'clock and was ready to go home.
For the rest of the week I went to Birr Equestrian Centre where I finished my work experience . I did various different things here including bringing people for a trek up the Slieve Bloom Mountains , teaching young kids how to ride and going to the mart .
